The Yellow Dress
One day, several years ago, when my mother and I decided to go shopping for clothes together, we stopped at a small, out-of-the-way store that was having a sale. Being the smart and thrifty shopper she had always been, my mother started scouting for the best deals on practical clothes in neutral colors that would “go with everything,” which was her usual style.
As she looked at some dark-colored wool pants, I started casually looking through some dresses. Then I noticed, peeking through the long line of matronly-looking dresses in drab colors, a striking
yellow dress with small red flower patterns. I showed it to my mother more as a joke than anything, not really thinking she would ever want to try it on. To my surprise, something in that dress made her wonder how she would look in it, and she decided to put it on.
The Kiss Not Stolen
The moment that slipped away
I had known him for years. Up until that moment, we’d had a neat little platonic relationship. But the day had come when I had finally decided to mess things up.
Same old story. We used to be just good friends. Well, it’s true that there was a physical attraction going on; we accidentally rubbed our arms against each other a little too often, and maybe had too
much fun spending too much time together, but... Things had never progressed from that point. Mostly we used to talk for hours. I could read him like a book, and I felt nobody could ever understand me better than he did. We connected on a deeper level than most people. Or so I thought.
A Long Journey to Understanding English
A five-minute drive, three wrong turns, and one very misunderstood stop sign.
Everybody has heard at least one story about the funny situations newcomers get themselves into when they first come to this country.
Quite a few of those stories happen because the newcomer isn't yet fluent in the local language. Others happen because they know just enough English to get themselves into trouble.
How about that one about the guy who got lost, and when asked to give the name of the street intersection he found himself at, he said: “I’m at the corner of One Way with Don’t Walk”? Or the kid who went to one of those night spots with the cutsie gender descriptions on the restroom doors, and didn’t know whether to choose “Buccaneers” or “Wenches”?
