From Productivity to Presence: Returning to Creative Flow
Do you remember the hours you used to spend as a kid, drawing, painting, creating collages, tracing things on paper? Or singing and dancing? Or storytelling and playacting? Do you recall how great that felt?
Then we become adults and often only create when it’s tied to productivity or income.
Tapping into your creativity is an effective form of self-care. Whether through writing, graphic designing, dancing or singing, I’ve often leaned into creativity, especially during challenging or turbulent times. I can actually tell the difference in relation to how I feel physically, mentally, emotionally, and energetically when I go too long without creative endeavors.
In my view, we should also exercise our creativity because it’s a spiritual practice that connects us to the Divine, helps process difficult emotions, and empowers us to rebuild with purpose. Creativity in this context is not a luxury, but a vital tool for spiritual and psychological resilience. Creativity reflects our Divine origins; it’s an active response to fear; it supports healing; it helps bring order to disorder; and it allows us to find answers within. It can also be so much fun!
In these emotionally intense times, nurturing your well-being is more important than ever. What is your inner child saying that you need right now?
Can you picture yourself sitting at the table with watercolors after a hard day? Here are just a few other ideas:
• Coloring books for adults, paint-by-numbers
• Cooking, cake decorating
• Sewing, knitting, embroidering
• Pottery modeling, wood carving, jewelry making
• Scrapbooking, flower arranging
• Soap or candle making
• Digital art
• Etc.
So, go forth and create! ;)
